We would like to introduce Craig Farish as the new superintendent at The Moccasin Wallow Golf Club. Craig started his position on Monday December 24th and comes to us highly recommended. His previous clubs are TPC Prestancia (sarasota), Cherokee Run Country Club (GA), Walden and Crofton CC (MD),and Hidden Creek CC (VA). Craig has worked extensively with TifEagle Bermuda grass and other strands of Bermuda and with his Country Club pedigree will help continue our vision of being a great golf course in the area. Craig grew up in Somers New York and was a very good High School Golfer in the Westchester County area or NY and spent time working at both Winged Foot and Waccabuc two of Westchester’s finest facilities. He is a graduate of the Rutgers University Golf Turf Management Program one of the best in the country. If you see Craig and his dog Skittles please introduce yourself to him. He is very excited about his opportunity here.

Mis-hit your driver — on purpose! — to find the sweet spot

A new practice method helps you learn faster by — get this — avoiding the sweet spot. Here’s how.

1. The theory

Instead of trying to pound the sweet spot practice swing after practice swing at the range, try catching a few on the heel and toe as well. By giving your brain multiple reference points to think about, you force it to work harder — so you can learn faster! It’s called variable training. Multiple studies prove that it can be wildly effective.

2. How to put it to good use

Tee the ball in its regular spot and try hitting it off the toe. After a few attempts, switch it up: Hit some clankers off the heel. Then go back to your quest to locate the center. For a real test, tee two balls off the clubface and see if you can knock them in tandem. Now you’re really putting your noggin to work! If you can teach yourself to create off-center hits on command, it’ll be easier to find the center when it counts.

Golf Course will be open Saturday December 22

The golf course will be open tomorrow Saturday December 22nd and will be CART PATH ONLY. The course is wet in some spots and can leave deep tire marks. Thank you for understanding. We will see everyone tomorrow.

Golf Course closed Friday December 21st but the restaurant will be opening at 2:00 PM and be open for dinner.

Due to the amount of rain we have received yesterday and today  we have decided to close for the day tommorrow December 21st and will reopen on Saturday December 22nd. The course received the water pretty well and it is drier than expected. That being said we will have to spend the day tomorrow removing water from the paths as well as repairing washed areas. We will be open for full business  for the entire holiday weekend. We will be opening the restaurant at 2:00 pm tomorrow Friday for lunch and dinner as well as the bar for drinks.

Jason Day’s 3 Keys to Better Golf

There are times when we all make this game too complicated. That’s why I started this article with a simple thought: Send it, then hole it. I’m not saying golf is easy, but I find that if you simplify your keys to executing all the main shots, you’ll stop playing golf swing and start playing golf. The goal is to advance the ball and drop it in the cup in as few strokes as possible. That’s really hard to do if you’re bogged down with swing mechanics. Instead, have a clear plan for what you want to do on the next shot, get your alignment right, and then make a swing or putting stroke that’s smooth and balanced. I guarantee if you keep it that simple, you’ll give yourself a better chance of playing good golf. On this page, I’m going to give you some keys to hitting all the main shots. Easy stuff to remember so you can put more focus on your round and not your swing. Like my coach, Col Swatton, says, “Understanding that the golf course is where you should play, and the range is where you practice, is your first step to lowering your scores.” — With Ron Kaspriske

PUT YOURSELF IN POSITION FOR A GOOD DRIVE
With a driver, I’m thinking only about hitting the ball as hard as I can in the center of the clubface. If you want to do the same, remember these keys before you take the club back: 1.) Get in a good setup. Start with a wide stance, a slight knee bend, your weight equally distributed on both feet and not in the toes or heels, and let your arms hang naturally as you tilt toward the ball from the hips. 2.) Always check ball position. If it’s too far back in your stance, it will kill your chance of the club coming into it square and on the correct path. The same is true if it’s too far forward. I like the ball lined up just inside my left heel. 3.)Think, slow takeaway. A lot of amateurs take the club back too fast, and that causes them to decelerate on the downswing. Do the opposite. By keeping my tempo smooth and taking it back slower, I can be aggressive through the ball without my timing being off.

TREAT YOUR IRONS WITH CARE
No matter what iron I’m swinging, my process stays the same. Here are my keys: 1.) Set up neutral. I want to hit the ball high, low, left and right, so I try to be as neutral as possible with my setup and grip. If you set up to hit only one type of shot, that’s fine, but you might struggle if the situation calls for something other than your stock ball flight. 2.) Shorten your swing. Good iron play is about hitting down on the ball with the center of the face. I find that’s easiest to do if you go with a three-quarter shot instead of a full swing. Put the ball an inch back in your stance, cut your backswing down, and focus on solid contact—not hitting it as hard as you can. The ball will go five to 10 yards shorter than with a full swing, so remember to club up. 3.) Finish like a statue. To improve your tempo and rhythm, make a swing that lets you get into a balanced, wraparound position like I am here.

GO BIG AROUND THE GREENS
Whether it’s a fringe chip or a pitch in tall grass, my three short-game keys don’t change. 1.) Focus on a spot in front of the ball. To avoid hitting it fat, you want the low point of the swing to be after it strikes the ball. This technique will help you get a nice, clean strike. 2.) Minimize wrist action. My chipping and pitching swings don’t have a lot of hinge. In fact, there’s very little elbow or wrist bend all the way through the shot. That makes it easier to make good contact and keep the clubface square with the target. 3.)Use the big muscles. It’s tempting to hit these shots using mostly your hands and arms, but your consistency will improve if you put some body into the shot. My shoulders rotate toward the target on the downswing, and my sternum is in front of the ball by the time the club strikes it.

PUTT WITH COMMON SENSE
My process on the greens has helped me become one of the best putters in the game. This is one area where the right type of practice will allow you to focus on line and speed when you play.

My keys: 1.) At address, get your eyes directly over the ball, and make sure your hands aren’t leaning the shaft too much forward, back, in or out. Your eye-and-hand positions greatly affect accuracy. 2.) Focus on path and face. A smooth-and-controlled stroke will help make sure the face is square with your putting line at impact. If you can’t roll it on the right line, nothing else matters. 3.) Overestimate. Amateurs often fail to give their putts enough break or speed to reach the hole. Varying your putting scenarios in your warm-up will help get a better feel for line and speed that day. But when in doubt, overestimate both. Give every putt a chance to go in, and you can bet some of them will.

What Causes Hooking the Golf Ball, and How to Stop it

Eliminate your hook with a simple grip change

If you’re a player who tends to hit a hook, first count yourself fortunate. A hook is the last stop on the road to a good golf swing, and you’re very close to hitting consistent, powerful shots. But it’s still a ball-flight problem you need to take care of to make that next step and become a scratch or near-scratch player.

A strong grip is by far the most common error I see with players who curve the ball too much from right to left. The right hand drifts to the right–away from the target–and moves underneath the club, as shown in the photograph below. With the right hand in this position, it will tend to turn over too much through impact. Because the position of the right palm roughly replicates the clubface, it’s easy to see why this turning over of the right hand causes the clubface to close and the ball to curve left.

To calm that hook down to a manageable draw, adjust your right hand to a more neutral position, as I’m demonstrating above. Turn it toward the target, so you can’t see your left thumb when you’ve made your completed grip. I also like to put my right index finger in a “trigger” position under the handle, which supports the club through the swing. If the finger wraps around the grip too much, the club tends to get loose at the top.

How much prize money each golfer earned at the 2018 Hero World Challenge

It’s not an official PGA Tour event. Still, the money earned at the Hero World Challenge spends nicely … and comes relatively easy in the 18-player, no-cut field. For finishing in last place, Hideki Matsuyama earned a cool $100,000. And he got to spend a week relaxing in the Bahamas at the plush Albany Resort. Nice work if you can get it.

If last place gets you $100,000, then first place has to be a tidy reward. A cool $1 million for Jon Rahm after his four-stroke victory over Tony Finau on Sunday with a closing 65 should help him cover the holiday gifts in the next few week.

“Ball-striking wise [my game] is pretty much where I want it to be,” Rahm said. “It was pretty much as perfect as it could be today. … To win [Tiger’s] event, his foundation’s event … this is really special.”

As if for good measure, Rahm wished everybody happy holidays as he was interviewed just off the green after his victory.

How much cash did the rest of the field in the tournament that benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation? Here’s the prize money earned for every player who made the cut this week.

Tiger Woods’ tournament in Bahamas draws four of the top five ranked players in the world

After facing Phil Mickelson in The Match in Las Vegas on Thanksgiving weekend, Tiger Woods will take on 17 of the best players in the world the following week in the Bahamas.

Woods, who won the Tour Championship in September to reach victory No. 80 on the PGA Tour and cap a remarkable return to golf following spinal fusion surgery, will be joined by 16 of the top 23 players in the world for the Hero World Challenge at Albany in Nassau, Bahamas.

Woods is the host of the Nov. 29-Dec. 2 tournament that benefits his TGR Foundation, as well as the Tavistock Foundation and Bahamas Youth Foundation.

Leading the 18-player field is world No. 1 Justin Rose, No. 3 Dustin Johnson, No. 4 Justin Thomas, No. 5 Bryson DeChambeau, No. 8 Jon Rahm, No. 9 Rickie Fowler and No. 10 Tommy Fleetwood. Fowler is the defending champion.

A second wave of top talent in the field is led by No. 11 Jason Day, No. 12 Xander Schauffele, No. 13 Woods and No. 15 Tony Finau.

Two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson, who is ranked No. 16, and reigning Masters champion Patrick Reed, who is No. 17, also are in the field. Reigning Players champion and No. 20 Webb Simpson, No. 21 Alex Noren and No. 23 Hideki Matsuyama round out the field for now.

Two exemptions will be announced at a later date.

In all, eight major champions are in the field.

Kuchar gets 8th TOUR win at Mayakoba Golf Classic

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico – It wasn’t easy, but you can’t argue with the results.

Matt Kuchar survived some shaky play down the stretch and rattled in a par putt from just inside three feet on 18 to shoot a final-round 69 for a one-stroke victory over Danny Lee (65) at the Mayakoba Golf Classic on Sunday.

J.J. Spaun (66) and Richy Werenski (67) tied for third, three back.

“It feels extra sweet having kind of had to suffer through a year of not playing great in 2018,” said Kuchar, whose last victory before today came at the 2014 RBC Heritage in Hilton Head, South Carolina. “Being four years removed since my last victory I realize how difficult it is to win on the PGA TOUR.”

With the win, Kuchar earned a spot in a handful of prestigious tournaments, first on the calendar being the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January.

With his regular caddie, John Wood, at a reunion, Kuchar won with a club caddie, David “Toucan” Ortiz, who had been assigned to him by the tournament director. Ortiz, a father of two from Playa del Carmen who caddies every day at El Camaleon Golf Club, was in tears as he accepted congratulations and rolled up the flag on 18 as a souvenir.

Although he went into Sunday with a four-shot lead, and kept a nice cushion for much of the day, Kuchar bogeyed the 14th and 15th holes, missing putts inside 10 and 5 feet, respectively, to make it close. With Lee on his heels, he closed with three pars to win.

The last one might have been the hardest. With mud on the back of his ball, which sat on the front fringe, he wasn’t sure how hard to hit it. He guessed mostly right, and the ball rolled to a stop nearly three feet short. It was a straight putt, but felt like a very long three feet.

“I certainly made it exciting coming in,” said Kuchar, who moves to fifth in the FedExCup. “It wasn’t the finish I was hoping for; I would have liked to have been able to five- or six-putt that final green. Winning out here is so difficult. The strength of field every week is awfully good.”

This week marked a return to form for a player who was used to being in the upper echelon but had fallen off. Kuchar was 76th in the FedExCup last season after being in the top 20 for eight straight years. He missed cuts, which he said was “not in my vocabulary” and “extremely frustrating.” He missed the TOUR Championship. He turned 40.

All of which led to some big questions.

Could he win in his 40s, like Fred Funk, the 2007 winner here? Could he reel off multiple wins, like Vijay Singh? Could he reach 10 or even 15, or was all of that wishful thinking?

Kuchar imagined hoisting more trophies, but also couldn’t be sure he wasn’t done winning.

“I’ve thought the other side,” he said. “I’ve thought, man, kids are getting younger and stronger and it’s more and more challenging for a guy that plays my style of golf to win and win multiple times.”

He came to Mayakoba without knowing exactly where his game was. He’d worked hard with his instructor, Chris O’Connell, leading into his only other start of this season, the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas, but finished T57. He was hitting the ball well, but not scoring.

He did both in Mexico, where he stayed in a casita on the beach with his wife, Sybi, and their two sons, Cameron, 11, and Carson, 9. Kuchar shot 64-64-65 over the first three rounds, leaving no doubt as to the state of his game. Even with his relatively ho-hum 69 on Sunday he broke the tournament record at 22-under and broke a win drought of four and a half years.

It was also his best 72-hole score on TOUR.

After wiggling in that final three-footer, he hugged his caddie, Ortiz, tossed his putter to the turf and embraced his sons. He kissed Sybi, who caddied for four holes in the first round after Kuchar’s playing partner Zach Johnson lost his caddie, Damon Green, to illness (heat).

The family savored the moment together.

“My kids have now gotten into it,” Kuchar said. “And so we do a lot of kind of family afternoon time on the golf course. It’s really been kind of one of those great, you know, father-son and even the whole family, even Sybi will come along and we’ll cram four people in a cart and just go out and play nine holes or six holes or four holes, whatever we have time for.

“I’ve really enjoyed those sessions,” he added. “My life has evolved. I used to only go out and be by myself or with a competitive match, and now having some kids to bring along, it’s really been rewarding. Fun times for me on the golf course.”

He still wants to win a major, and to play on the U.S. Presidents Cup next year. He even spoke of potentially reeling off multiple victories in 2019. First, though, Kuchar was headed to this week’s Australian Open, followed by the World Cup. His season of frustration, the doubts about his future, the existential angst of a milestone birthday—all of it had been wiped away.

Golf: Doctors cite ‘undervalued’ health benefits, call for inclusiveness

(CNN)When Louise Tulip picked up a set of golf clubs for the first time since her teens, she had no idea the sport would consume her — much less provide any health benefits.

The recent retiree had spare time on her hands and picked up the hobby she previously disdained as “a game for old people.”

Four years later, Tulip plays golf three to four times a week at her local club in north London, dropping her handicap to 15 while brisk walking 15 to 20 miles a week.

The 58-year-old credits the sport for a variety of health benefits, and has turned both her husband and 24-year-old son into golfers.

“My blood pressure is lower, and my cholesterol readings are lower; generally, my weight is very stable without doing any other exercise,” she says. “It’s been very beneficial.”

With golf participation falling drastically over the past decade in both the US and UK, the sport’s insiders have been preaching its health benefits as a way to stem the decline.

Now a study led by the top doctors on golf’s European Tour appears to back up Tulip’s claims.

Andrew Murray, who is fresh off his stint as Team Europe’s chief medical doctor at the Ryder Cup, and his predecessor of 10 years Roger Hawkes, were among 25 international experts to author the 2018 International Consensus Statement on Golf and Health, which promotes the lifestyle benefits of golf.

The statement analyzed 400 studies on the health effects of golf — including a Swedish report from 2009 that found golfers have an “increase in life expectancy of about five years” — and summarized their benefits and risks.

Cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure levels were all improved by playing golf, says Hawkes, along with better balance and strength for players above 60, reducing the risk of falls and sparing healthcare costs.

The physical benefits were mostly a result of walking and swinging, so using golf carts annuls much of the upside.

“If you play 18 holes of golf walking at a reasonable pace, you actually feel quite tired in the end,” Tulip says.

“Perhaps you don’t feel out of breath in the way that you would in football or tennis, but because the game itself takes longer, three to three-and-a-half hours, it can be more demanding than people think.”

The one significant risk is overexposure to the sun, according to the report which encouraged wearing sun screen.

‘Undervalued’ benefits

The mental gain from playing golf — especially among seniors — could prove to be the sport’s hidden gem, says Hawkes, who is currently a medical adviser to the European Tour.

“Social interaction is the risk factor which has been undervalued,” he says. “Mental health is a big thing in this day and age, and moderate physical activity is associated with a reduction in anxiety and a reduction in depression.”

Tulip concurs, noting that golf is “very lovely socially, because you actually talk with the people you’re playing with as you play — rather than most sports where you play the game then talk after.”

Furthermore, despite the notorious frustrations of the sport, it helps clear her head.

“When you’re playing, you really don’t think about anything else other than playing,” Tulip says.”So it’s very good for getting rid of any concerns or worries we may have — for four hours at least.”

To increase participation in golf, the statement calls for methods to reverse “perceptions that it is expensive, less accessible for those from lower socioeconomic groups, male dominated, a sport for older people, or difficult to learn.”

“We’ll always have exclusive clubs,” says Hawkes. “But we want governments and policymakers to see that there are benefits in playing golf, and that perhaps they should open up golf clubs to more types.”

Hawkes points to his involvement in Golf in Society, a Scottish golf organization that grants course access to those with dementia and Parkinson’s while analyzing the game’s impact.

“Golf clubs are probably underutilized,” he says. “There are times that other groups could be using those courses and getting benefits that were demonstrated for most people.

“It’s been criticized because it’s exclusive, and we want to try and change that.”

Ask an Equipment Expert: What do face inserts and grooves on putters actually do?

Q. Do insert materials, grooves and various putterface designs actually do anything, or are they mostly for sound and feel? — K. Lee, via Facebook

The design elements you mention indeed do it all. A softer insert, for example, can make a firmer ball feel softer at impact, but its lighter weight also allows for more perimeter weighting, forgiveness and stability. Odyssey’s White Hot and Scotty Cameron’saluminum inserts do this admirably.

Grooves, on the other hand, are pure performance enhancers. In reality, the grooves themselves don’t do anything — it’s the areas between them that do the work.

At Evnroll, we engineer larger spaces between the grooves in the middle of the putterface and smaller ones in the heel and toe sections to equalize speed on all strikes. Without this variance in groove design, the ball would travel different distances depending on where you made contact across the face. Trust me — you don’t want that.

Rely on the fundamentals to find more fairways

There’s a stat on the PGA Tour—strokes gained/off the tee—that indicates how much of an advantage a golfer gets from driving when compared to other golfers. If you look at the names at the top of the strokes-gained list — Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, Francesco Molinari, Tommy Fleetwood, Rory McIlroy—you start to realize how valuable good tee shots are to your success. Me? I’m hovering around top 15 on that list, and my work with the driver helped me put together my best season as a pro, nearly winning the Memorial and RBC Canadian Open. GET OFF TO A GOOD START
Many golfers, including me sometimes, start their backswing with a poor turn. The mistake is a flat takeaway where the shoulders rotate level with the ground. Your lead shoulder should move away from the target but also downward as the hands stay close to the body. Everything should move together and in sync, which helps keep the club in a slightly more vertical position going back. This gives you room to shallow the club into a great hitting position on the way down. A flat turn prompts the opposite. The shallow backswing makes you want to swing down more steeply and cut across the ball—the slice move. A drill I use to reinforce a good move off the ball is to pin the upper portion of my left arm against my body, keep it there with my right hand, and then make a one-armed backswing (below). This feeling of a connected takeaway, with the left shoulder dropping, will set the tone for your new-and-improved driver swing.

LET IT END NATURALLY
Some golfers don’t load up and end their backswing too early. Others keep their hands and club swinging back after the body stops winding. Either will lead to inconsistency.

The backswing should end when your upper body feels like it can’t coil any farther against a stable lower body. This feeling of coil is best achieved by letting the trail arm (right for right-handers) stay on top of the left for as long as it can in the backswing (below). This helps maintain good swing width—important for solid contact and power—and deters you from taking the club back too far.

SYNC THE THROUGH-SWING
Once the backswing ends, what comes next happens in a flash, so it’s hard to be conscious of controlling body movement. But if you can get your through-swing to happen in the right sequence of motion, you’ll hit your best drives.

The order: Rotate the lower body toward the target, follow with the upper body, and then finally let the arms and club swing past the body through impact. A lot of this will happen naturally if you learn how to get the lower body moving first. I start with a bump of my hips toward the target, which initiates my lower-body rotation. It’s a bump, then turn. Do that, and your upper body, arms and club will get pulled along.

Don’t think about hitting the ball with your arms. It’s easier to control the shot with body rotation. The secret is making an efficient backswing and a synchronized downswing. Keeping it simple will help you hit it in the center of the face more often. That’s what really matters.

Golf the MOC update October 16th.

 We In august and September we received a tremendous amount of rain which had caused us to close for a significant amount of time as the course was really wet in spots. We have been drying out and the golf course is really turning the corner and will be in great shape in the very near future. We are dry so that cart access is 90 degree rule and cart path only on the par 3’s. In the next few weeks we are planning some more minor projects which include cart path repairs as well as winter golf course preparations.

In the next few weeks buffalo road will be closing to the south of the golf course as the developers are working on their project. We at the MOC will hopefully have the first part of Buffalo road ending at our driveway. We will post directions from south of the club to get you the quickest access to the clubhouse parking lot. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your support.

We are looking forward to our best season yet and happy hour starts at 3 pm.
